Folk Dance Ensemble Tarbatu

In 1951 students from Estonian Agricultural Academy separated from the Tartu University group of dancers to form their own dance group.

Our dancers have been instructed by:

  • 1951-1952 Ilmar Reidla
  • 1953-1962 Linda Malviste
  • 1963-1965 Kristjan Torop
  • 1966-1968 Linda Malviste
  • 1969-1975 Jolante Madi
  • 1976-1996 Enn Madi.
  • 1996-... Jaanus Randma

In 1983 the dance group was named ensemble, followed by adding Tarbatu to the title in 1990.

Since 1996 the ensemble has been instructed by Jaanus Randma. The artistic side of the ensemble is coordinated by Jaanus Randma and his assistants Maarja Pärn and Anneli Kann. The ensemble comprises of approximately 150 members and four different groups: junior, intermediate, primary and the alumni group.

The repertoire of the ensemble has always been rich with variety. The ensemble has been active in performing dances from most Estonian authors including folk dance from folklore and modern stage folk dance.

We have been and continue to perform national dances from other countries and contemporary dance styles. While learning a new repertoire we prefer to ask for the guidance of the original author if such an opportunity is available.
